Omar Velázquez

Artist

Omar Velázquez (Isabela, Puerto Rico, b. 1984) is an artist living and working between Puerto Rico and Chicago. He earned a BFA in Printmaking from the University of Puerto Rico and an MFA in Painting and Drawing from The School of the Art Institute in Chicago. His works revisit the history of painting, sculpture, and music from the island, and explore the politicization of Puerto Rican identity. He has presented individual projects at the Puerto Rico Museum of Art and the Puerto Rico Museum of Contemporary Art and was recently an artist residency at MASS MOCA. His latest solo project, Miracle Fruit was presented at Corbett vs Dempsey Gallery Chicago IL (2019). He has participated in group exhibitions, biennials and triennials, presenting his work internationally in Japan, Beijing, Spain, Republic of Macedonia, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, Philadelphia, Argentina, Mexico, and Colombia.
